As someone who has spent time traveling to the best culinary destinations in the world and exploring different international cuisines, I can certainly vouch for France’s rich and diverse food culture.

From Michelin-starred restaurants and fine dining spots to casual street food, there is something for everyone in France—or à Chacun son goût, a French phrase for acknowledging that people have different preferences.

If you’re planning to visit France soon, use this as a guide to understand the country’s food culture and make the most of your culinary experience.

Croissants and Baguettes

Food is a central part of French culture, and the French are proud of their culinary heritage. A very significant aspect of French cuisine is the boulangerie or bakery. These can be found around almost every street corner, offering a variety of freshly baked goods, from croissants and baguettes to macarons and éclairs—perfect for a quick and delicious breakfast or snack!

Café Food

Another place you can’t skip is the café. Unlike in other countries, cafés in France are not just places to grab a coffee on the go. People visit cafes to socialize, read, and enjoy a leisurely meal. You can always see someone sitting in the corner reading a book or having a glass of wine with breakfast. So, whether you’re in the mood for a simple croque-monsieur or a hearty steak, find yourself a spot in a French café.

Wine

No discussion about French cuisine is complete without mentioning the wine. France is home to some of the world’s most famous wine regions, including Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne. An interesting fact you may not know about France is that French wine is typically served with food, not as a standalone drink. It is because wine is considered a part of the meal rather than a separate beverage.

Cheese

France has over 400 varieties of cheese, each with its own unique flavor and texture. From the meaty Époisses de Bourgogne to the creamy Brie, there is a cheese for every palate. It can also be served with a glass of wine at the end of a meal.

Soufflé

Soufflés is a French dessert made from egg yolks and whipped egg whites and has a light and fluffy texture. It can be sweet when made with bananas or chocolates, making it a common dessert in French restaurants. But it can also be savory when made with cheese.
